Children NOW releases its annual California Report Card, the State of the State's Children.

Children NOW is a non-partisan research and advocacy organization working to raise children's well-being to the top of the national policy agenda. It has released its annual report card, which may be helpful to your organization. This report illustrates how children and families are faring in California. It's rich and concise with information that your organization can use to inform policymakers and grantmakers on the status of families in the state. This must-read for family-serving organizations in California contains information that can be tied to the work that your organization does to improve family well-being. It provides information on indicators such as employment income, food security, child maltreatment and foster care. In addition, it cites recommendations to reduce child poverty in California; monitor the implementation of new child welfare and foster care legislation; and further strengthen supports for children in foster care. FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CFRA is off to an exciting start in 2007! The Legislature is back in session with 43 new members (one of the largest turnovers due to term limits), the Governor was inaugurated for his second term on January 5, he will present his State of the State today, and release his proposed budget tomorrow, January 10. We know that health coverage for all is his major policy agenda. Much debate and speculation is already occurring - Who will pay? What are the implications for families? Will it hurt or help families that are already struggling? Will it penalize financially fragile families? Will it contribute to family stability and financial sustainability? However, this is only the beginning of the debate. It's the starting point that is expected to dominate discussions in the Legislature in the next several months before the May budget revisions and the final June budget deadline. CFRA is prepared to respond. We will be reviewing the Governor's budget with our policy consultant and we will issue a press release to the media, along with a legislative update to you, our members. We will continue to update you regularly. Watch your email! We're poised and ready to represent your interests and work to create strong families and communities.

Thank you!
Leticia Alejandrez, Executive Director
